The\u00a0Asahi<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>Pottery\u00a0<\/b>is rooted in Japan\u2019s oldest center for tea cultivation, the famed town of Uji.<\/p>\n

The pottery has been in continued production over 400 years, through 16 generations of the Matsubayashi family. From the time of the founder, Tosaku, the Asahi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0workshop has provided tea bowls treasured for preparing whipped tea to nobility, warrior rulers , and tea masters.<\/p>\n

Another representative\u00a0Asahi<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0product is the spouted teapot (kyusu or hobin) for preparing steeped tea.\u00a0It was introduced to the workshop\u2019s repertory about 150 years ago by the 8th generation master, Chohei.<\/p>\n

Today, under the guidance the 16th master, Matsubayashi Hosai, the Asahi workshop continues to focus on utensil for various modes of serving tea, while at the same time creating a wide variety of utensils suited to contemporary life.<\/p>\n

The family\u2019s work can be found in leading museums around the world including The Brooklyn Museum and The British Museum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

A small tasting cup for drinking fine teas made by Asahiyaki, a 16th generation kiln in Uji near Kyoto. This cup is made with their house clay and glaze which veers between cream and light brown, with areas of blushing pink and dark speckles throughout. Well balanced and a pleasure to hold, once used they will also start to develop a unique crackle that will change over time.<\/p>\n
