Yunomi (White Kairagi)

A pottery yunomi handmade by Noritada Kimura, a great Kyoto potter.

As a Kyoto potter Noritada has a freedom to make cups in many different styles, and this is his take on a famous Hagi-yaki glaze called Kairagi. Kairagi means ‘plum tree skin’ and is named as the glaze is said to resemble the pattern of bark on a plum tree, although it is sometimes called ‘shark skin’ after it’s similarity to the sharkskin used on the handles of samurai swords. We received a few white kairagi cups in different styles – this particular one is distinguished by the black oilspot rim which is different to the body of the cup.

We have multiple cups in this glaze, all with minor variations. If you would like photos of the cups, please let us know, otherwise we will send the cup closest to the one pictured.

Dimension: 9cm height x 8cm diameter. Volume: ~280ml. Weight: 200g.

Like most hagi ware, this style of cup with inclusions needs to be soaked in glutinous rice before use, which will plug any gaps that cause weeping. For more information on weepy cups, please see here
